Ebisu is the only one of Japan's seven lucky gods said to be purely native — a fisherman's god, always smiling, always a little late, because he can't hear the other gods calling from the ceiling of heaven. He waits. Good things come to the patient.
Ebisu Shoten — "Ebisu's shop" — opened in Gozsdu Udvar, the passage off Dob utca in Budapest's old Jewish Quarter, with the same idea. Sit at the counter. Let the coals do the work. Skewers over binchōtan charcoal, small plates built around what came in that morning, and a back bar stocked deep with sake, shōchū and Japanese whisky.
